The Ring Necked Parakeets of London

There are a number of stories about how the Ring Necked Parakeet (Psittacula krameri) came to be living in London

There’s stories about a breeding pair being released either by Jimi Hendrix in 1968; others say they escaped from the movie set of The African Queen in 1951. Some people blame Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin and others say it was caused by the Great Storm of 1987

The real story is most probably that they’re escaped pets that have slowly but surely gaining a foothold in the capital. Whatever the real story the fact is they’re now a very permanent and noisy fixture in the urban landscapes of London
